Get WhatsApp updates from the Play Store

The easiest way to update WhatsApp is through the Play Store, where updates will work their way to you automatically. Make sure it's not waiting for an update by opening the Play Store, pressing on the trio of lines in the top left to open the menu. There, select My apps & games and see if it's listed at the top of the screen.

What's new in WhatsApp+

Coming soon: send any file type

Until now, for no apparent reason, file transfers on WhatsApp were limited to only specific file types. Aside from common video, image and audio formats, you could already send documents, presentations and PDFs, but now WhatsApp has decided to change things up. Users will soon be able to send any file type (like PSD or APK files).

Don't get too excited, though, as the file size will be limited. iOS users will get preferential treatment with 128 MB as the maximum, while Android users will be limited to 100 MB and WhatsApp Web users will get just 64 MB. These limitations may be put in place to avoid overloading the servers.

It's not yet clear when this update will be made available to everyone, as it's only being tested with a few users at the moment. But, have patience, as it's sure to reach you soon.

Pin conversations with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.264

WhatsApp now offers you the ability to pin conversations, both for your group chat and for classic conversations. This can be very useful if you receive a lot of messages from different contacts: you can keep an eye on your favorite contacts so that they will always appear at the top of your list of recent messages. To do this, simply display your chat window and long press on the one you want to pin, then you just have to press the pin symbol to set it. There is a limitation though: you can pin only 3 conversations. Yes, it's a shame, but it assumes you have no more than three favorite conversations to pin on WhatsApp.

Translate and format font with bold and italics with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.149

Now you can format your messages on WhatsApp. The new feature allows you to make your messages bold or italic on WhatsApp. Just select the text you want to format, press the three dots on the right, and then select bold, italic or any of the other options that suit your tastes. Or, you can choose to translate the text to another language right inside the app.

Snapchat-style statuses with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.73

Unable to buy Snapchat, Facebook is trying to copy its features in WhatsApp Messenger. Text statuses have been a part of the app since 2009, but now you can post photos with emoji, text, sticker and more as our status.

Each part of your WhatsApp Status is visible for 24 hours. You can choose who can see it and who can't in the settings. In short, if you are familiar with Snapchat or Instagram, you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Mind Blowing Whatsapp New Features . Modify Texts , Google Drive Connect and many more...

WhatsApp on Android will soon let users format their text to add bold or italics style and share docs from Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive.

For Android users, WhatsApp v2.12.535 will let them add a bold or italics format to a text. To add bold type the text in between two * (asterisks) symbols and for italics type between two underscore _ symbols. For your friend to see the formatting they need to be on the same version. The formatting feature worked fine for us.

The app has also added the ability to share PDF documents from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive accounts, rather than just the device storage. However we didn’t see the Google Drive option for us in the new APK version. Additionally when users are backing up a chat, WhatsApp will reflect how the progress goes as well. WhatsApp has been adding a host of new features to the app since 2016 began. Recently the company introduced support for sharing documents, a new of new Emojis and a completely revamped Settings page on Android. The Settings screen brought new features including a circular profile picture, instead of a square one like before 

On iOS WhatsApp added features like Pinch to Zoom’ on video content, third-party app support for sharing pictures and videos. iPhone users can now pick from a variety of solid colours for their chat background as well. WhatsApp now has 1 billion monthly active users, just seven years after the app was first launched. The instant-messaging app sees nearly 42 billion messages sent each day via its platform, with over 1.6 billion photos being shared daily. Numbers also reveal that over 250 million videos are shared each day on WhatsApp, and that there are over 1 billion groups.

WhatsApp video calling feature leaked.

WhatsApp seems set to be taking on Skype in a bigger way in coming weeks with the planned roll out of a video calling feature.

German blog Macerkopf.de has leaked screenshots of the WhatsApp video calling feature from private beta versions of the iPhone version of the app. Screenshots of the video calling feature show that users will be able to turn off the mic as well as flip the camera. The layout of video calls shows two windows, one each for the caller and the person who has received the call.

The report also says that the colour green will become more dominant in WhatsApp for iOS' scheme. This will make the iPhone version of WhatsApp more consistent with the Android version.

WhatsApp will also get tabs for chats now, so users will not have to exit chats each time they switch between multiple conversations.

With this move, Facebook will have two messaging services offering similar features: Messenger and WhatsApp.

Google introduces Project Tango's Android 3D mapping smartphone

Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group has announced the prototype release of an Android-based 5-inch phone with 3D sensors that it calls Project Tango.

ATAP project lead Johnny Lee said in a blog post that the phone has been designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. Examples of uses include capturing the dimensions of a user's home before going furniture shopping, and assisting the visually impaired navigate unassisted in unfamiliar indoor environments.

The phone is fitted out with features such as a 4MP camera, two computer vision processors, integrated depth sensing, and a motion-tracking camera. The camera enables the phone to take over a quarter of a million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real time and combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around the user.

On the software front, the phone is integrated with development application program interfaces to provide position, orientation, and depth data to standard Android applications written in Java and C/C++, as well as the Unity Game Engine.

From today, developers will have the chance to get their hands on one of 200 available prototype dev kits. But to do so, they will need to pass their idea by Google, explaining what they plan to build with the device in project areas of "indoor navigation/mapping, single/multiplayer games that use physical space, and new algorithms for processing sensor data". The company said it expects to distribute these initial units by March 14, 2014.

Lee said the announcement of Project Tango has been a long time coming, and the aim is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and notion.

"Over the past year, our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to harvest research from the last decade of work in robotics and computer vision, concentrating that technology into a unique mobile phone," he said.

"Now, we're ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality."

ATAP is the same research unit that Google recently announced it will not be letting go of after Chinese giant Lenovo purchased Google's Motorola division.
