Get WhatsApp updates from the Play Store

The easiest way to update WhatsApp is through the Play Store, where updates will work their way to you automatically. Make sure it's not waiting for an update by opening the Play Store, pressing on the trio of lines in the top left to open the menu. There, select My apps & games and see if it's listed at the top of the screen.

What's new in WhatsApp+

Coming soon: send any file type

Until now, for no apparent reason, file transfers on WhatsApp were limited to only specific file types. Aside from common video, image and audio formats, you could already send documents, presentations and PDFs, but now WhatsApp has decided to change things up. Users will soon be able to send any file type (like PSD or APK files).

Don't get too excited, though, as the file size will be limited. iOS users will get preferential treatment with 128 MB as the maximum, while Android users will be limited to 100 MB and WhatsApp Web users will get just 64 MB. These limitations may be put in place to avoid overloading the servers.

It's not yet clear when this update will be made available to everyone, as it's only being tested with a few users at the moment. But, have patience, as it's sure to reach you soon.

Pin conversations with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.264

WhatsApp now offers you the ability to pin conversations, both for your group chat and for classic conversations. This can be very useful if you receive a lot of messages from different contacts: you can keep an eye on your favorite contacts so that they will always appear at the top of your list of recent messages. To do this, simply display your chat window and long press on the one you want to pin, then you just have to press the pin symbol to set it. There is a limitation though: you can pin only 3 conversations. Yes, it's a shame, but it assumes you have no more than three favorite conversations to pin on WhatsApp.

Translate and format font with bold and italics with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.149

Now you can format your messages on WhatsApp. The new feature allows you to make your messages bold or italic on WhatsApp. Just select the text you want to format, press the three dots on the right, and then select bold, italic or any of the other options that suit your tastes. Or, you can choose to translate the text to another language right inside the app.

Snapchat-style statuses with WhatsApp Messenger version 2.17.73

Unable to buy Snapchat, Facebook is trying to copy its features in WhatsApp Messenger. Text statuses have been a part of the app since 2009, but now you can post photos with emoji, text, sticker and more as our status.

Each part of your WhatsApp Status is visible for 24 hours. You can choose who can see it and who can't in the settings. In short, if you are familiar with Snapchat or Instagram, you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Mind Blowing Whatsapp New Features . Modify Texts , Google Drive Connect and many more...

WhatsApp on Android will soon let users format their text to add bold or italics style and share docs from Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive.

For Android users, WhatsApp v2.12.535 will let them add a bold or italics format to a text. To add bold type the text in between two * (asterisks) symbols and for italics type between two underscore _ symbols. For your friend to see the formatting they need to be on the same version. The formatting feature worked fine for us.

The app has also added the ability to share PDF documents from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive accounts, rather than just the device storage. However we didn’t see the Google Drive option for us in the new APK version. Additionally when users are backing up a chat, WhatsApp will reflect how the progress goes as well. WhatsApp has been adding a host of new features to the app since 2016 began. Recently the company introduced support for sharing documents, a new of new Emojis and a completely revamped Settings page on Android. The Settings screen brought new features including a circular profile picture, instead of a square one like before 

On iOS WhatsApp added features like Pinch to Zoom’ on video content, third-party app support for sharing pictures and videos. iPhone users can now pick from a variety of solid colours for their chat background as well. WhatsApp now has 1 billion monthly active users, just seven years after the app was first launched. The instant-messaging app sees nearly 42 billion messages sent each day via its platform, with over 1.6 billion photos being shared daily. Numbers also reveal that over 250 million videos are shared each day on WhatsApp, and that there are over 1 billion groups.

WhatsApp video calling feature leaked.

WhatsApp seems set to be taking on Skype in a bigger way in coming weeks with the planned roll out of a video calling feature.

German blog Macerkopf.de has leaked screenshots of the WhatsApp video calling feature from private beta versions of the iPhone version of the app. Screenshots of the video calling feature show that users will be able to turn off the mic as well as flip the camera. The layout of video calls shows two windows, one each for the caller and the person who has received the call.

The report also says that the colour green will become more dominant in WhatsApp for iOS' scheme. This will make the iPhone version of WhatsApp more consistent with the Android version.

WhatsApp will also get tabs for chats now, so users will not have to exit chats each time they switch between multiple conversations.

With this move, Facebook will have two messaging services offering similar features: Messenger and WhatsApp.

Google introduces Project Tango's Android 3D mapping smartphone

Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group has announced the prototype release of an Android-based 5-inch phone with 3D sensors that it calls Project Tango.

ATAP project lead Johnny Lee said in a blog post that the phone has been designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. Examples of uses include capturing the dimensions of a user's home before going furniture shopping, and assisting the visually impaired navigate unassisted in unfamiliar indoor environments.

The phone is fitted out with features such as a 4MP camera, two computer vision processors, integrated depth sensing, and a motion-tracking camera. The camera enables the phone to take over a quarter of a million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real time and combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around the user.

On the software front, the phone is integrated with development application program interfaces to provide position, orientation, and depth data to standard Android applications written in Java and C/C++, as well as the Unity Game Engine.

From today, developers will have the chance to get their hands on one of 200 available prototype dev kits. But to do so, they will need to pass their idea by Google, explaining what they plan to build with the device in project areas of "indoor navigation/mapping, single/multiplayer games that use physical space, and new algorithms for processing sensor data". The company said it expects to distribute these initial units by March 14, 2014.

Lee said the announcement of Project Tango has been a long time coming, and the aim is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and notion.

"Over the past year, our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to harvest research from the last decade of work in robotics and computer vision, concentrating that technology into a unique mobile phone," he said.

"Now, we're ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality."

ATAP is the same research unit that Google recently announced it will not be letting go of after Chinese giant Lenovo purchased Google's Motorola division.

Every Android fan might already have an idea that Google gives the names of the Android OS versions based on some delicacy, with the idea that every new version is a treat. There are quite a lot of new Android versions released till date, with the latest one now is the Android Jelly Bean OS, which came with the version number 4.1. Android 4.3 Features Leaked. - Nexus 4

Recently a Nexus 4 was sold on ebay by a Googler that was apparently running unreleased Android 4.3 OS. While Google has yet to announce the software update to its widely used mobile operating system, which is most probably going to happen at the event company has scheduled for next week – thanks to this leak we have been able to get a sneak peak of what’s coming in advance. In this post we are going to tell you about changes in Android 4.3 that Google will announce next week.

These changes in Android 4.3 we are reporting are not based on rumours as we have told you the whole build of Android 4.3 has been leaked and available on the web.

As far as the leaked build of Android 4.3 for Nexus 4 goes the upcoming update from Google is going to be a minor one with improvements to already included features and changes that are mostly under-the-hood. Here are the changes in Android 4.3 Google might announce next week.

CHANGES IN CAMERA APP

Google introduced a new camera app in the Google Play editions of Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One that featured stock Android ROM instead of the company ROM. Both of these smartphones featured a different camera app than the one found on Android 4.2. The new app featured camera controls at different place and a few new filters. Now in Android 4.3 Google is going to make these changes available to all Android users.

LOCATION BASED IMPROVEMENTS TO SAVE BATTERY LIFE

One of the changes in Android 4.3 includes location based improvements in order to save battery life. It has been reported thanks to the leaked 4.3 ROM that Google is introducing a new kind of system in Android that will keep the WiFi scanning on all the time. Although it sounds like a problem more than a solution this could really help Android devices in the long run. Searching for WiFi even when it is turned off will allow the operating system to use the WiFi triangulation instead of using the GPS chip for location based services. This will help third party apps to know the location of the user even without taking advantage of the built-in GPS – that eats way more battery than WiFi. Google might add some tools in the Android SDK to help developers in implementing this feature in their apps.

CHANGES TO NOTIFICATIONS

Changes in Android 4.3 also include new features in the notifications system of Android OS. While details about the notification system are blurry at this point many suspect that Google might allow third-party apps to show user’s notification history as well as add ability for users to customize the notification bar much like they are able to install a custom home screen.

BLUETOOTH LE AND AVRCP 1.3

Google is also reported to make Bluetooth related changes in Android 4.3. The company has reportedly added support for Bluetooth LE or Low Energy in Android by default, which means all the phones running the latest version will get the feature currently available to some devices. The Bluetooth LE is used connect with bluetooth accessories and addition of this feature could point towards Google’s plans of releasing more wearable gadgets including a smartwatch.

The AVRCP 1.3 support added in Android 4.3 will make it more efficient for devices to connect with different audio gadgets such as car speakers etc.

OTHER TWEAKS

Apart from the ones mentioned above there are several other changes in Android 4.3 that are of minor nature and are meant to improve the overall experience of the users. Some of the changes include auto-complete feature for the dialer, new emojis, new fonts and more. And of course the new update also brings several bug fixes as well.

Google has just updated their distribution charts for the Android platform and it suggests that 20.9% of Android phones and tablets have Ice Cream Sandwich installed. Gingerbread, the most popular Android version ever, still powers 57% Android devices though it was released way back in December 2010.

The above data is based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within a 14-day period so it may not account for the Android users who do not have Internet on their phones (and this may not be a small set).

Andy Rubin, the Guy behind Android

So, the story has been told of how Android is causing a storm in the smartphone market by taking up a lion’s share of the market. Also, Android has revolutionized the smartphone market by making it possible for smartphone manufacturers to make phones of different price ranges. However, one question that most people do not ask is this: who is the guy behind Android? In a simple answer, the name behind the success of Android is Andy Rubin, a Silicon Valley engineer.

The brainchild behind Android

This is the guy who foresaw the huge potential that the smartphone market offered, and executed a strategy to make this happen. Mr. Rubin is a respected engineer, and this is mainly due to his remarkable experience in building mobile gadgets and working with successful mobile start-up companies.  He is the one running the Android unit at Google, and he has been recently promoted to be one of the 18 senior executives at Google. But then, what makes this guy stand out?

A tinkerer

Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of Mr. Rubin is that he is a renowned tinkerer. Legend has it that his house is full of robots, all of which he has made during his free time. However, this tinkering has not always been limited to robots; Mr. Rubin has been known to anticipate the mobile market, and this is why he became a perfect fit for Android. As he is known to be a prolific code writer, Mr. Rubin is said to have started working on the Android operating system as early as 2003, and this is way before Apple released the flagship iPhone, which shaped the smartphone market.

Too demanding

Many people who have worked with Mr. Rubin have accused him of being too demanding, requiring his employees to work more than is necessary. This allegation has been buttressed by the fact that the file and rank of Android has been seeing constant turn over. But then, this may be one of the reasons as to why Android is such a successful product. With the mobile market being so competitive, such kinds of attitudes and traits are not uncommon. Having weighed the options and placed his bets on the smartphone market, Mr. Rubin convinced the then Google CEO Eric Schmidt to give him resources necessary to develop the Android operating system to compete with Apple’s iOS. Actually, it is Mr. Rubin’s persistent nature that first got him into Google. He had made the Sidekick phone that happened to be a favourite of the two Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Their meeting then led to Mr. Rubin convincing them to take up the Android project, and he was thus given the task of running it at Google.

A generous man

Mr. Rubin is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, as well as his generous. This may seem like a personality contrast, but it is how he has managed to blend these two traits that has enabled Mr. Rubin to be so successful. It is said that after the fall of 2008, when Android started paying off, he received millions of dollars due to a clause in his contract. He then surprised everyone in his team when he shared some of the money with his employees, and from then henceforth, he has been throwing a party for them every six months in his home. This has been instrumental in getting the employees to work so hard on Android and make it the operating system that it is today. This was also a big gesture since it was the first time such a thing had happened at Google.

Unique business acumen

Mr. Rubin changed the status quo of the mobile operating system market with the successful introduction of Android. For two years, between 2005 and 2007, Android was a very secretive project at Google. During that time, mobile wireless carriers had the authority to determine which apps could be installed on mobile phones, and this proved to be very limiting. However, when Android was released, it changed the dynamics. Having worked at Apple, Mr. Rubin was well aware that Android needed to be somewhat different from Apple’s proprietary iOS in order to stand a chance of getting a significant share of the smartphone market. This happened to be releasing Android as free software, as opposed to iOS, which was a closed ecosystem. The reasoning behind this was that it would make it easier for smartphone manufacturers to adapt the operating system to their phone’s specifications. Mobile CEOs started trooping to his office in an attempt to get the opportunity to install Android on their smartphones, and this was thus the game changer.

Simple but effective strategy

The strategy behind the launch of Android as free software was to increase its market share in the smartphone market, and then leverage on this to sell advertisements on the mobile devices running the operating system. This was a strategic move that changed the mobile industry. Google had been making apps for iOS, and it saw this as an opportunity to get many more apps on Android, and thus reach more people. Being visionary, Mr. Rubin saw the potential of the mobile market as a new and lucrative advertisement frontier. Thus far, this strategy seems to be working since Google is gobbling up around 80% of the mobile advertisement revenue, according to comScore, an authoritative technology analyst. This has thus put Google in a great position to build products for the future, mostly on mobile. Also, Android in the operating software running emerging ubiquitous consumer computing gadgets such as Google Glass, which enables you to send emails, photos and even use Google Maps on the glasses.

When a new version of Android is pushed out, the question many Android users are probably asking is when will they get it? Past few weeks it seems that I always wake up to pretty exciting news for anyone that is looking to purchase, or has a Samsung device.

Samsung Readies 5G Technology, Could Hit Market By 2020

Samsung reports that over this past weekend, they successfully tested their 5G network. That’s right - 5G! Using 64 different antenna elements, testers were able to pull data at speeds of up to 1Gbps, matching that of the fiber optic speeds we are now seeing in the U.S. from Google Fiber. Now that it has been tested, Samsung is ready to bring it to consumers, but their time frame doesn’t seem very rushed. How does the year 2020 sound to you? 

Under the new platform, users can download and upload data at speeds of up to tens of gigabits per second (Gbps), compared to 75 megabits per second (Mbps) posted by the fourth-generation long-term evolution (LTE) service.

Samsung Electronics said it has successfully tested the platform using the 28 Gigahertz (GHz) waveband to transmit data at a speed of 1 Gbps.

We have heard talk of 5G and even 6G from Verizon, but that was nothing in terms of actual testing and implementation.

While 2020 might seem forever away, it’s just 7 years. Not too bad, right?

Blackberry Goes Cross Platform With BBM, Coming to Android This Summer

After years of requests, Blackberry is finally bringing BBM – their one-time incredibly popular messaging app – to multiple platforms. Yes, BBM is coming to Android this summer. And…yeah. Isn’t it too late, Blackberry? There are dozens of high-quality messaging apps on the planet that have already consumed people’s lives. Plus, Google is about to release Hangouts (formerly Babel) as a unified messaging service to the masses that will gobble up all sorts of the messaging pie.

Announced this morning at Blackberry Live, BBM for Android (and iOS) will have groups and voice chat and screen share and all that jazz at some point, plus it should work on anything Android 4.0 and above, but come on, it doesn’t matter anymore. Google Announces Google Play Game Services With Cloud Save, Achievements, and Leaderboards Across Platforms

We’re at the Google I/O keynote and Google just announced their new Google Play game services which include cloud save, achievements, and leaderboards. They also announced that it will be cross platform, so that iOS users can take advantage. As if those new, awesome features weren’t enough, Google+ sign-in has been integrated into this service and once games are installed with this API you can invite friends from your circles on G+ and they will receive notifications to join directly into your game. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more about this new awesome service.
